Monsoon

Put your swamp cooler on a smart thermostat.

Monsoon is an adapter box for evaporative coolers. It runs the pump and both fan speeds and wets the pads before the fan starts, so an ordinary smart thermostat can control the cooler.

  1. 1Install the Monsoon box at your cooler.
  2. 2Keep the thermostat wire already in your wall.
  3. 3Put up the smart thermostat you want: Nest, ecobee, Honeywell and more.

Install the box, keep your wire, pick your thermostat

Monsoon goes in at the cooler and connects to the thermostat over the wire you already have, so you can put up whichever smart thermostat you like. Your thermostat's app, schedules and voice control keep working. We confirm your exact model before you pay.

Step 1: the Monsoon box is installed at the swamp cooler. Step 2: it connects over the existing thermostat wire in the wall. Step 3: that wire goes to the smart thermostat you choose, such as Google Nest, ecobee, Honeywell Home, Amazon Smart Thermostat or Emerson Sensi.
1

Install the Monsoon box at your cooler

It replaces the old relay box or switch wiring. Do it yourself, or have a licensed pro install it.

2

Keep the wire in your wall

Monsoon runs over the thermostat wire you already have. In most homes there's no new wire to pull.

3

Put up the smart thermostat you want

Any of these, or another standard 24V smart thermostat.

  • Google Nest
  • ecobee
  • Honeywell Home
  • Amazon Smart Thermostat
  • Emerson Sensi

Have a different thermostat? It probably works if it has:

  • Standard 24V wiring, the kind used for central heating and air
  • A cooling terminal (Y1), plus Y2 if you want both fan speeds
  • A fan terminal (G) for fan-only mode
  • Constant power on C, which Monsoon supplies

Most swamp coolers still run off a dial on the wall.

Evaporative cooling is cheap to run and works well in dry heat. The switch that controls it can't hold a temperature or follow a schedule, and a smart thermostat can't connect to the cooler on its own.

How Monsoon connects your thermostat to the cooler

A smart thermostat switches 24-volt signals, while a cooler's pump and blower run on 120 or 240 volts. Monsoon reads the thermostat's calls for cooling and fan, then switches the pump and fan speeds itself. Pick a setting below to see which wires carry current.

What is the thermostat asking for?

Thermostat is calling for Cooling (Y1). Cooler is running Pump and fan on low.

What's inside the box

Monsoon mounts at the cooler, on the roof or beside the house, so the enclosure is built for summer heat and storms.

Will it work with my swamp cooler?

Version 1 is designed for conventional whole-house evaporative coolers that have a separate water pump and a one- or two-speed blower motor, on 120V or 240V. Down-draft and side-draft units both work.

Designed for coolers from

Champion / Essick Air, MasterCool, Hessaire, Phoenix / Frigiking, Bonaire Durango, and other conventional units.

Not in version 1

  • Coolers with proprietary electronic controllers, like many Breezair / Seeley units
  • Variable-speed (ECM) blower motors
  • Portable and window coolers that plug into an outlet

Swamp cooler and smart thermostat questions

Can I use a Nest thermostat with a swamp cooler?

Not directly. Nest and other smart thermostats send low-voltage 24VAC signals, while a swamp cooler's pump and blower motor run on 120 or 240 volts and need pad pre-wet logic that thermostats don't have. Monsoon sits between the two. It powers the thermostat, reads its cooling and fan calls, and switches the pump and motor speeds.

Does Monsoon work with ecobee, Honeywell and other smart thermostats?

It's designed for any conventional 24V thermostat that can be set up for one- or two-stage cooling, including Google Nest, ecobee, Honeywell Home, Amazon and Emerson Sensi models. We'll publish model-by-model setup steps before delivery.

Do I need to run new thermostat wire?

Usually not. Monsoon needs four or five conductors between your thermostat and the cooler: R, C, G and Y1, plus Y2 for two-speed control. The cable that fed your old wall control can often be repurposed for low-voltage use, and heavier conductors get short pigtails so they fit your thermostat's terminals. Your installer confirms it meets local code.

What does pad pre-wet do?

When the thermostat calls for cooling, Monsoon runs only the water pump for a few minutes (2, 4 or 6, set on the board) so the pads are soaked before the blower starts. You get cool air from the first minute instead of a blast of warm, dusty air.

Which swamp coolers does Monsoon work with?

Version 1 is designed for conventional whole-house evaporative coolers with a separate water pump and a one- or two-speed blower motor, on 120V or 240V. That describes many down-draft and side-draft units from brands like Champion / Essick Air, MasterCool, Hessaire, Phoenix and Bonaire Durango. Coolers with proprietary electronic controls, such as many Breezair models, and variable-speed motors aren't supported in v1.

Can one thermostat run my furnace in winter and my swamp cooler in summer?

That's the goal for homes where the furnace and cooler share a thermostat location: the thermostat heats through the furnace as usual and cools through Monsoon. Wiring varies a lot here, so tell us about your setup when you pre-order and we'll confirm it before you pay anything.

Who installs it? Do I need a licensed pro?

Homeowners comfortable with line-voltage wiring can install the DIY Kit where local code allows, using the wiring guide for their cooler. Paid cooler installs generally require a licensed contractor across the Southwest (in New Mexico, for example, they fall under MM-3 HVAC licensing), so the Installed option is always done by a licensed local HVAC professional. Always shut off power at the breaker and the cooler's disconnect first.

Is Monsoon safety certified?

Monsoon is still in development. The production unit is being designed for third-party safety listing (UL or ETL), and we plan to have it listed before delivery. We'll share the listing details before we charge anyone.

When will my pre-order ship, and do I pay now?

Pre-orders are scheduled for spring 2027 delivery, ahead of cooler season. You don't pay anything today. A pre-order reserves your founder price and your place in the first production run. We'll email a checkout link before your unit ships, and you can cancel at any time.

Does it need Wi-Fi, an app or a subscription?

No. Monsoon has no app, account or cloud service of its own. Scheduling, remote control and voice assistants keep working through your thermostat's own app.

Reserve a Monsoon for next summer

It takes about a minute. Pre-orders ship spring 2027, and nothing is charged until your unit is ready.
